Clarissa Jimenez, who recently graduated from the AVANCE Houston GED program, spoke about her experience with us at the event. Our marketing team had the opportunity to interview Clarissa before this occasion and we could learn that, when she had her second child, she realized that she wanted to give her family a better future. This realization prompted her to prioritize her education and take GED classes. She believes it is never too late to go back to school.
Clarissa explains that her experience with the GED program has been wonderful. She graduated just a few weeks before the Houston Literacy Heroes event, with math being the only subject she had left. Dr. Patin and Gladys provided incredible support, offering one-on-one meetings that allowed for personalized feedback—an aspect unique to AVANCE. “The level of customized education was impressive”– Clarissa emphasizes. “They were always available and helped me find online resources to study at my own pace. Whenever I couldn’t make it to class, they offered me the option to join online through the distance learning program”.
Being recognized as a Houston Literacy Hero is a significant honor that reflects the dedication and tireless efforts of our staff, volunteers, and community partners. Their unwavering commitment to our mission enables us to deliver impactful educational opportunities that empower adult learners to achieve their full potential.
We extend our sincere appreciation to the Mayor’s Office for Adult Literacy and Comcast for this distinguished recognition. This milestone strengthens our resolve to further our efforts in promoting literacy and education, ultimately contributing to a brighter, more literate future for all.
