On November 7th, AVANCE Houston was honored as a recipient of the esteemed Houston Literacy Hero Award, presented by the Mayor’s Office for Adult Literacy in partnership with Comcast. This recognition underscores our steadfast dedication to advancing literacy and empowering both individuals and families across the Houston community.
AVANCE Houston Honored as a Houston Literacy Hero Awardee
At AVANCE Houston, we believe that education is fundamental to fostering personal growth and break the cycles of poverty and generational trauma. Our Adult Education Program, allows participants to prepare and successfully pass the General Educational Development (GED) tests, to enhance their education, career prospects, and overall well-being. We take immense pride in our commitment to adult literacy through initiatives that create meaningful and lasting change.
Our GED program exemplifies this commitment by providing structured, supportive instruction in key academic subjects, including language arts, mathematics, social studies, and science. The program is thoughtfully designed to prepare participants not only to pass the GED examination but to develop the confidence and skills necessary for long-term success. By offering flexible class schedules and a supportive learning environment provided by an amazing team of teachers, we ensure that educational advancement remains accessible to all, regardless of life’s competing demands.
Clarissa Jimenez, who recently graduated from the AVANCE Houston GED program, spoke about her experience with us at the event. Our marketing team had the opportunity to interview Clarissa before this occasion and we could learn that, when she had her second child, she realized that she wanted to give her family a better future. This realization prompted her to prioritize her education and take GED classes. She believes it is never too late to go back to school.
Clarissa explains that her experience with the GED program has been wonderful. She graduated just a few weeks before the Houston Literacy Heroes event, with math being the only subject she had left. Dr. Patin and Gladys provided incredible support, offering one-on-one meetings that allowed for personalized feedback—an aspect unique to AVANCE. “The level of customized education was impressive”– Clarissa emphasizes. “They were always available and helped me find online resources to study at my own pace. Whenever I couldn’t make it to class, they offered me the option to join online through the distance learning program”.

Their unwavering commitment to our mission enables us to deliver impactful educational opportunities that empower adult learners to achieve their full potential.
