Adult education student completes her GED in record time!

Angela Mentado is a recent Adult Education graduate. She was born and raised in Houston, where she attended school. Her parents were happy about her grades and always considered her a good student until she decided to drop out of high school and start an independent life away from school. After a few years, she decided to start a family, and now she is the proud mother of three children.

What seemed like a good choice when she was 17 turned out to be very different, and she lived a life filled with financial challenges. Angela obtained her General Educational Development (GED) certificate because she wanted to help her husband with their home finances and, most importantly, set a good example for her children.

After searching online for various GED programs, she found that none of the options met her needs at the time. However, she later discovered AVANCE and its flexible schedule, which enabled her to participate from her home during the day while still being able to take care of her three children.

In her own words

I was determined to complete the program. However, some days were more difficult than others. It was difficult to join class every day as my sister-in-law got sick, and I took it upon myself to care for her.

However, my biggest motivation to complete the program were my children, who often asked me about my high school graduation and prom pictures, and I had nothing to show them. I felt embarrassed, and I used to avoid the subject.

After registering in early April, I achieved my goal in less than two months! This achievement is for me and one I can share with my entire family. My family attended the graduation, which was very emotional for us all. I am the eldest of four children; all my siblings graduated high school except me. I owe my mother this graduation.

What is next for Angela?

With her GED in hand, Angela eagerly prepares for the next phase of her educational journey. She is pursuing a career in healthcare. Her plans involve starting school to earn a medical assistant certificate and eventually becoming a nurse.
